Sept. 20

   Bush announces creation of Cabinet-level Office of Homeland Security to be led by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge. Islamic clerics urge bin Laden to voluntarily leave Afghanistan. Pentagon announces that 5,131 members of Air Force National Guard and Air Force Reserve ordered to active duty.
   Region: Middletown hosts memorial service and candlelight vigil. John P. Williamson, fire chief of Battalion 6 of FDNY, laid to rest in Warwick.
Sept. 21
   Taliban rulers refuse to hand over bin Laden. Taliban troops take up positions in mountains on border with Pakistan. Thousands demonstrate in Pakistan. German authorities say they believe terrorist group based there began planning U.S. attacks as early as 1999.
   Region: Vigil held at Veterans Memorial Park in Warwick. Memorial service held at Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville. Firefighters from Battalion 7 hold vigil in Unionville.
 Sept. 22
   Taliban say they shot down unmanned spy plane. United Arab Emirates ends diplomatic relations with Taliban. Editorial page assistant at New York Post notices blister on finger; later tests positive for skin form of anthrax.
   Region: Protesters fear terrorist attacks on Indian Point. Candlelight vigil held at New Windsor Town Hall.

Sept. 23
   Powell promises to lay out evidence against bin Laden. Rumsfeld confirms that the United States lost unmanned spy plane in Afghanistan. Taliban says it can't find bin Laden. FAA institutes crop-duster ban fearing bioterrorism attack.
   Region: Prayer service held at Yankee Stadium. Monticello hosts memorial service at Neighborhood Facility.
Sept. 24
   Bush freezes assets of 27 people and organizations with alleged ties to terrorists and demands foreign banks do the same. Bin Laden calls on Pakistan's Muslims to fight "the American crusade." Taliban say they are dispatching 300,000 fighters to defend borders. United Nations says Taliban threaten to kill U.N. relief workers in Afghanistan.
   Region: Hospitals, health departments put on alert.
Sept. 25
   Saudi Arabia cuts ties with Taliban. Bin Laden's organization says, "wherever there are Americans and Jews, they will be targeted." Pentagon calls nearly 2,000 more reservists to duty. Crop-duster ban lifted by FAA.
   Region: Robert King, New York State University chancellor, pledges to cover costs of college educations for children and spouses of those who died in the Sept. 11 attacks. Candlelight vigil for Myrna Maldonado held in Unionville.

Sept. 26
   Thousands storm abandoned U.S. Embassy compound in Afghan capital of Kabul. U.N. agency says assault on Afghanistan could send up to 1.5 million refugees into neighboring countries. Maintenance worker at Trenton regional post office in Hamilton, N.J., visits physician to have lesion on arm treated.
Sept. 27
   FBI releases photos 19 suicide hijackers. Taliban say they can communicate with bin Laden and have asked him to leave country voluntarily. Bush announces plan to bolster airline security, including use of federal marshals. Governors nationwide plan to use the National Guard troops for airport security. Teresa Heller, letter carrier at West Trenton post office, develops lesion on her arm.
   Region: FDNY firefighter Bob Hamilton's memorial service held at St. Mary's Church in Washingtonville. Memorial held in Monroe for Edward Mazzella Jr.
 Sept. 28
   Bush official says U.S. special forces have conducted scouting missions in Afghanistan. Pakistani delegation fails to persuade Taliban to surrender bin Laden. U.N. Security Council unanimously approves resolution demanding nations take sweeping action against terrorism. Attorney General John Ashcroft says authorities have arrested or detained more than 480 people. Erin O'Connor, assistant to NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw, notices a lesion. The 7-month-old son of an ABC producer in Manhattan spends time at the network offices, develops rash and is hospitalized soon after the visit. He is later diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax.
   Region: FDNY firefighter Thomas P. Holohan Jr. laid to rest in Chester. Candlelight vigil held at Chadwick Lake Pavilion in Town of Newburgh. Memorial service held for Christoffer Mikael Carstanjen, United Flight 175 victim, in Sunderland, Mass.
