Thousands rally in major cities to discourage armed retaliation. U.N. resumes food shipments to Afghanistan.
   Region: FDNY firefighter Thomas Foley laid to rest in Nanuet. Memorial service held for FDNY firefighter Michael Montesi in Highland Mills. Memorial service held for Donald J. Tuzio at St. Columba's Church in Chester. Services for FDNY firefighter Dennis Devlin held in Washingtonville. Services for FDNY firefighter Denis Germain held in Sloatsburg.
Sept. 30
   Taliban say bin Laden still in Afghanistan and being kept hidden. Afghanistan opposition says territory gained and hundreds of Taliban soldiers defected during days of fighting in northern mountains. Foreign aid workers in Iran stockpile emergency rations for possible flooding of Afghan refugees. Bob Stevens, photo editor at the supermarket tabloid The Sun in Boca Raton, Fla., starts to feel ill.
   Region: Memorial service for Cathy Smith at Marian Shrine in West Haverstraw. Father and son Daniel and Jason Coffey mourned at memorial service at St. Patrick's Church in Newburgh. Candlelight vigil held at Chester High School.
Oct. 1
   Bush says $6 million in assets blocked as countries stop flow of money to terrorist networks. Anti-Taliban alliance and former Afghan king agree to convene council as a first step toward forming new government. Erin O'Connor, NBC assistant to Tom Brokaw, goes to doctor with low-grade fever and bad rash and is prescribed antibiotic Cipro. American Media Inc. mailroom employee Ernesto Blanco hospitalized with pneumonia.
   Region: National Guard set to watch state's airports. Orange County Sheriff's Office holds vigil to remember victims.

Oct. 2
   Rumsfeld heads to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt and Uzbekistan to talk with leaders about war on terrorism. British Prime Minister Tony Blair says Taliban regime must surrender terrorists or "surrender power." NATO secretary-general says United States has provided "clear and compelling" evidence of bin Laden's involvement in attacks. American Media photo editor Stevens arrives at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Fla., with fever, vomiting and confusion. He deteriorates rapidly.
   Region: Federal agents raid five mid-Hudson gas stations. Services held in Newburgh for FDNY firefighter John Giordano. Memorial service for Thomas Dowd held at St. Anastasia's Church in Harriman.
Oct. 3
   Anti-Taliban alliance says it is coordinating offensive with United States and expects to receive weapons from Iran and Russia. Bush administration officials say some Sept. 11 terrorists also took part in 2000 attack on USS Cole in Yemen and 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Africa. Doctors determine Stevens has anthrax. In New Jersey, Heller, the West Trenton letter carrier, hospitalized and biopsy performed.
Oct. 4
   Britain becomes first government to outline alleged evidence against bin Laden. Pakistan becomes first Muslim nation to say U.S. evidence links bin Laden to attacks. NATO allies grant United States access to airfields and seaports. Florida officials confirm that a patient has anthrax, but they believe it's an isolated case.
   Region: Thief reaches over food rack at the Smith Clove Convenience & Deli in Monroe and swipes jar with more than $425 in cash intended for families of terrorist victims. Memorial for FDNY firefighter Doug Miller held at St. Joseph's Church in Matamoras, Pa. Memorial service for FDNY firefighter Mark Whitford held at St. Mary's Church in Washingtonville.

Oct. 5
   U.S. Army dispatches 1,000 soldiers to former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan, which borders Afghanistan. Powell extends sanctions on bin Laden's al-Qaida group and 24 other foreign organizations considered terrorist. National Guard begins patroling airports across country. Stevens is pronounced dead, becoming the first anthrax death in the United States in 25 years.
Oct. 6
   Bush warns Taliban "that time is running out" to surrender terrorists. Taliban offer to release eight imprisoned foreign aid workers if United States halts "massive propaganda campaign." White House dismisses offer.
   Region: Memorial service for Lynne Morris of Monroe held at First Congregational Church in Middletown. Services held for FDNY firefighter Gerard Nevins at St. Mary's Church in Washingtonville. Memorial Mass held for Francis J. Feely at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Otisville. Funeral Mass for Peter Gyulavary held at St. Stephen's Church, Warwick.
Oct. 7
   American and British forces unleash missile attacks against Taliban military targets and bin Laden's training camps inside Afghanistan. Bin Laden, in videotaped message, praises God for Sept. 11 attacks and swears America will never "dream of security" until "the infidels' armies leave the land of Muhammad." Emmy Awards postponed for second time. CDC notifies AMI that it will seal building because tests show anthrax spores on Stevens' computer keyboard and in nasal passages of mailroom employee Ernesto Blanco.
   Region: Memorial service for Mike Asher held at Monroe Temple of Liberal Judaism.
