Oct. 26
   President Bush signs anti-terrorism bill into law. Small amount of anthrax found in CIA mailroom. Supreme Court building closed for anthrax testing. State Department mail handler hospitalized with inhalation anthrax. Anthrax found at New York postal facility. Taliban officials say Afghan opposition figure Abdul Haq captured and executed for treason.
Region: Mysterious white powder found in bathroom at Jeff-Youngsville High School turns out to be flour. A 15-year-old boy is arrested and suspended from Tuxedo High School, accused of leaving pile of powder below desk with note claiming it was anthrax. Warwick Valley High School students are sent home after teacher finds powdery substance on desk.


Oct. 27

   Between 5,000 and 10,000 Pakistanis join "jihad brigade" heading to Afghanistan to fight holy war against United States.
Region: Memorial Mass for FDNY firefighter Carl Asaro held at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Bullville. Memorial service for Michael Fodor of FDNY held at Christ Episcopal Church in Warwick. People gather at Delano-Hitch Stadium to pay their respects to Sept. 11 victims. More than 100 people in Kingston hold rally against war in Afghanistan.
Oct. 28
   Gunmen storm Christian church in Behawalpur, Pakistan, and kill minister and 15 others. New Jersey postal worker diagnosed with inhalation anthrax. Memorial service attended by victims' families held at Ground Zero.
Region: New York City's DEP allocate $30 million to improve security for the city's water supply.

Oct. 29
   U.S. aircraft intensify strikes around strategic northern Afghanistan city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Traces of anthrax found in mailrooms of Supreme Court, State Department and Health Department. Two new cases of anthrax reported in New Jersey, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 15.
Region: Memorial service for FDNY firefighter Gregg Atlas held at St. Albert's Chapel at National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown. Sen. Charles Schumer visits Valley Central Middle School in Montgomery to field students' questions on terrorism. An anthrax scare closes Livingston Manor Central School.
Oct. 30
   The Federal Aviation Administration imposes flight restrictions around U.S. nuclear plants and advises 103 nuclear facilities to fortify security. Alert warnings issued on Oct. 29 are based on information from Canadian intelligence officials. British PM Tony Blair arrives in Syria to help in Middle East peace efforts. U.S. jets pound several areas held by the Taliban. A huge explosion north of Kabul creates a massive mushroom cloud. The Pentagon says it has a small number of ground troops in Afghanistan to coordinate air strikes and to open lines of communication. A Manhattan hospital worker with inhalation anthrax is "struggling for survival."
Region: Memorial service for Peter Freund of FDNY at St. John's Lutheran Church, Middletown. If unidentified white powder pops up at Sullivan County BOCES, officials announce they would seal off the area, call local law enforcement, and carry on as usual until getting further instruction. The Army National Guard announces it will send an estimated 200 soldiers to relieve manpower overloads at West Point.
Oct. 31
   The French newspaper Le Figaro claims that Osama bin Laden stayed for 10 days in a Dubai hospital in July, 2001, for treatment of a serious kidney ailment. Under heavy security, two armored vehicles transport $200 million in gold from a vault in the Bank of Nova Scotia, located in the ruins of the World Trade Center. Taliban forces in northern Afghanistan are hit with heavy bombardment from B-52 bombers, indicating possible preparedness for Northern Alliance troop movements on Taliban positions. A New York City hospital worker dies from inhaled anthrax, becoming the first anthrax death not linked to the postal service or the news media.
Region: To keep their own officers and other personnel from harm, Middletown police ask that people who receive suspicious packages to leave them in a bin outside the police station on James Street.

Nov. 1
   The FBI announces it has alerted law enforcement agencies in eight western U.S. states that it has unconfirmed information terrorists may be targeting suspension bridges on the West Coast. Pakistani press sources say the Taliban have arrested 25 followers of tribal leader Hamid Karzai and plan to execute them. American warplanes attack Kabul for the first time in four days, striking targets at the northern edge of the capital. The fear of anthrax spreads to the U.S. Midwest with a preliminary finding of contamination at a Kansas City postal facility.
Region: FAA issues no-fly zone near nuclear power plants, including Indian Point in Buchanan. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point pub- lishes "Afghanistan, a Regional Geography," a 116-page, fact-packed handbook.
Nov. 2
   Homeland Defense Secretary Tom Ridge issues an "indefinite" high alert against an undefined terrorist attack. Hundreds of New York firemen march to Ground Zero in an emotional protest over Mayor Giuliani's decision to scale back the number of workers searching for victims. U.S. B-52 bombers continue carpet bombing front-line Taliban troops. Hamid Karzai, previously announced as captured, allegedly escapes the custody of the Taliban. A U.S. special forces helicopter crashes in bad weather in Afghanistan. The injured crew members are rescued by another helicopter on the same mission. The downed chopper is later destroyed by F-14 jets.
Nov. 3
   Senior British officials say that coalition forces are about to mount the first significant ground offensive in an attempt to establish a "humanitarian bridgehead" in a corridor from Uzbekistan through enemy positions in northern Afghanistan in support of Northern Alliance forces. U.S. jets continue to blast Taliban strongholds on Afghanistan's two main battle fronts. Al-Jazeera TV broadcasts another taped message from Osama bin Laden, in which he warns Arab leaders not to back the efforts of the United Nations. Bin Laden says any Muslim who supports UN initiatives will be considered an "infidel."
