Oct. 17
   Thirty-one staffers at Daschle's office test positive for anthrax. Congressional leaders shut down the House. Gov. Pataki says his offices in Manhattan tested positive for anthrax.
Region: Suspicious letters prompt Monticello courthouse to shut briefly. Fire trucks, police and Orange County hazmat unit dispatched to South Junior High School for report of white powder.
Oct. 18
   Two new cases of skin form of anthrax reported – assistant to CBS anchorman Dan Rather and postal worker in New Jersey. Victory in Afghanistan will require putting troops on ground, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld says.
Region: Local district attorneys favor stiff penalties for anthrax hoaxes. Suspicious envelope holds aspirin; police arrest Kingston teen. Stephen Evers of Newburgh, employee of Valley Supreme supermarket in Pine Bush, charged with causing anthrax scare at Ellenville National Bank.

Oct. 19
   U.S. ground forces battle in Afghanistan, opening new phase of war on terrorism. Anthrax strains surfacing with terrifying impact in Florida, New York and Washington all similar, Bush officials say. New York Post employee develops skin form of anthrax. Second New Jersey mail carrier is confirmed to have skin anthrax.
Region: Risk for bioterrorism attack here low, experts say. FDNY firefighter Gerard Nevins buried in Washingtonville. Brown powder found on floor at regional mail processing center at Stewart.


Oct. 20
   U.S. Rangers launch raids into Afghanistan. Two U.S. soldiers killed when their helicopter crashes in Pakistan. Anthrax confirmed at Ford building on Capitol Hill. FBI locates mailbox in New Jersey where anthrax letters dropped. Paul McCartney and dozens of stars perform at benefit concert in Madison Square garden.
Region: Memorial Mass for Michelle Renee Bratton at St. Joseph's Church in Middletown.
Oct. 21
   Washington Mayor Anthony Williams announces that two workers at Brentwood postal facility have anthrax. Tests begin on hundreds of Washington postal workers.
Region: "An Evening of Honor" held at Monroe-Woodbury High School in Central Valley.
Oct. 22
   Two Washington postal workers die; anthrax suspected.
Region: Memorial Mass for John Ginley of FDNY at St. Stephen's Church, Warwick.

Oct. 23
   Two workers from Brentwood postal facility are confirmed dead from inhalation anthrax. New Jersey postal worker is confirmed to have anthrax. Anthrax is confirmed in a Washington facility that sorts White House mail. Secretary of State Colin Powell asks Israel to withdraw from Palestinian-controlled areas to protect solidarity of U.S.-led alliance against terrorism.
Region: Kingston mother opens an unexpected package of vials containing white powder and a surgical glove addressed to her 7-year-old son.
Oct. 24
   U.S. Postmaster General John Potter says, "There are no guarantees that mail is safe." Air strike in Kabul kills 22 Pakistani militants linked to bin Laden. U.S. House of Representatives approves anti-terrorism bill giving police new powers.
Region: Powder at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh causes anthrax scare. Suspicious white powder is found aboard a commercial flight from Chicago to Stewart.
Oct. 25
   Israel agrees to begin withdrawal from occupied Palestinian territory. Anthrax at Capitol Hill is described as very high quality.
Region: White powdery substance discovered on mail-processing machine at the Mid-Hudson Processing and Distribution Plant in Newburgh. Customers and workers trapped in Village of Florida post office for about four hours after small amount of white powder is found in package.
